Creating a Modern Industrial Design in Your Home

The industrial style first manifested itself back in the 1970s when warehouses, old factories and mills were being renovated into residential spaces. Initially, it was seen by some as a harsh reminder of the past. However, like a lot of things, over time, it became a “look” in itself that people wished to attain for their living space. Typically, when we think of industrial design in home interiors, we think exposed brick walls, timber roof beams and steel columns. Some people like to inject just a touch of the industrial look and this is possible with the furniture and interiors accessories that posess aspects of steel, glass and polished wood.

Leather is an often overlooked material that works well in an industrial themed design. Furthermore, it can be easily adaptable to new trends so it’s a classic choice also. Choose the Aura dining chair because its form makes it super comfortable and its slim wooden, tapered legs would pear back a more bulky aesthetic of the Calia dining table. The Calia table hits all the notes of industrial design with its welded steel legs; it also gives great options for extension when you need extra space for entertaining. Industrial themed design is about bringing in elements and sometimes a mix-matched look underlines that giving a modern touch. We just adore this Nature dining table, it’s a wonderful mix of rustic and industrial design. It’s a 2 metre table so ideal for entertaining and it has a few different options of leg configurations so it’s a good choice. These Arlington leather dining chairs are aspirational in their design and a timeless classic that would fit into any dining room look. For smaller spaces, the 120cm diameter version of the round Mikado dining table is an astute selection while also still meeting your desired industrial aesthetic. If you have a dining room as part of your kitchen and you need some casual seating for your kitchen island, we simply adore this retro’ Cucina chair with its mix of black leather and walnut and a few of these chairs would also sit comfortably into your industrial theme.

Modern Industrial Design in the Living Room

Demonstrating your rustic industrial tastes in the living room has never been easier and our selection provides you with perfect inspiration to meet the look. Most living rooms need some elements of storage and/or display and we think the Zest sideboard is a fantastically functional piece. Its brushed steel accents tick the industrial box but it also has lots of room for storage of books, entertainment units and/or ornaments. For seating, the substantial Bianca tan corner group is a good mainstay, especially in a large and bright room. Pair this with the large Glam coffee table and complete the look with at least one of the sleek Calia tall and wide bookcases and your main pieces of industrial furniture for the living room are complete. Make a statement with the inclusion of the Zelda burnt orange chair with its eye-catching slim gold legs to add the cherry on top of your industrial themed living room. For smaller spaces, you can’t go wrong with the high-design Piper leather sofa with brass effect legs. Pair with the smaller Glam coffee table and some useful storage such as the Dice bookcase which can be wall mounted for a perfect aesthetic.

For a taste of the industrial in the bedroom, you really don’t need to look much further than the simplicity of the Calia range with their metal accents. The Calia bed frame will be your focal point (it’s available in 4’6” and 5’). The 1 drawer nightstand is another sleek design in the range and is both functional and stylish. Storage in the Calia range comes in the form of the chest of drawers with its iron steel finish once again capping off the look. You could contrast this with the inclusion of the Celebrity white wardrobe; its mirrored front will give fantastic depth to the room and add a unique touch to the look. We do also adore the Outback drawer chest for storage with its beautiful finish of the leather and brass effect handles.  The Walkworth 5 foot bed is another option for an industrial bedroom theme; its dark colour and woven texture tick all the boxes plus there’s the added bonus of all the storage when you lift the base. Pairing this with the Turin wardrobe provides a general dark aesthetic which could easily be brightened with some fun wall art or finish the look with a bronzed mirror such as the Aaaliyah wall mirror

Pulling the Industrial Theme Together

Industrial styling on your home is nice because it is timeless and you can be as bold with it as you wish. It also suits lots of budgets so it’s accesible to many. Simplicity is key to this look so don’t overthink it or overload your spaces. Less is always more. Colour and décor wise, sticking to a base palette of different shades of greys, from light to darker greys; for the more adventurous, you could choose black warmed up with wood furniture and warmer tones/textures from the likes of leather. You could really picture a timeless Chesterfield sofa in a living room scene in that context! You can then layer in colour in other ways. Simple shelving can have an impact and adding your favourite books improves the aesthetic. Keep accessories to a minimum so a vase or two (we love this cool vase to add a colour pop!), some candles and plants like succulents or cacti are great. If all else fails, you can always think about calling in the experts in the form of our in-house team of interior designers and avail of our introductory offer of €49 for a professional interior design service!
