Rest Assured

Finding the right mattress is all about discovering what works best for you - but with so many options and factors to consider, the process can feel overwhelming.

The Essentials

A restful night’s sleep should leave you feeling refreshed and ready for the day ahead. However, if your mattress is no longer providing the comfort and support you need, it may be time to rethink your relationship with the place where you spend a third of your life.

To simplify the decision-making process, Claire Spencer, store manager at EZ Living Interiors, Mahon Point, Cork, offers straightforward advice. "Start with the basics - ask yourself what you like or dislike about your current mattress. Is it too firm or too soft? Does it lack support in certain areas?"

Before diving into the selection process, Claire recommends setting a budget. "Decide how much you’re willing to spend, and our knowledgeable sales team will help you find the best mattress to suit your needs within that range."

"The Conrad mattress delivers that luxurious, boutique hotel feel, thanks to its plush, cloud-like top layer," she explains. "Another great option is the Respa Regent, which offers excellent value - our customers love it, and it remains one of our bestsellers."

Making The Right Choice

"With so many options, it's easy to feel overwhelmed," Claire acknowledges. "Don't test out too many mattresses, or you’ll end up more confused. Stick to three to five options and spend at least five to fifteen minutes lying on each one. If you share your bed, bring your partner along or, at the very least, get their approval before making a final decision."

Did you know that athletes and those who lead an active lifestyle tend to sleep warmer? The same applies to women experiencing menopausal symptoms, which is an important consideration when choosing a mattress.

"For those who overheat at night, a mattress with cooling layers - like the Respa Gel Supreme - can help regulate temperature," Claire notes. "Similarly, for older customers, a gel topper can provide extra support for more delicate joints and bones."

Sizing Matters

Knowing the right mattress size is crucial, especially with European bed measurements now commonly available.

"If you’re unsure, go home and measure - this is especially important for six-foot beds," Claire advises. "If space is tight, consider a rolled-up mattress or even two three-foot mattresses zipped together for easier access upstairs."

Caring for Your Mattress

Once your new mattress is in place, a little routine maintenance will keep it in top condition. Regular vacuuming helps prevent dust mites from settling in, while a washable mattress protector adds an extra layer of hygiene and longevity.

Claire also suggests a simple way to stay on top of mattress care. "Rotate your mattress twice a year - don’t flip it - and do it when the clocks change. That way, it’s easy to remember."
