Styling a home office

There is a rise in the amount of people working from home all over Ireland. While of course this is not a situation that will suit everyone (neither employee nor employer) but where it does exist, it can work well with some specific parameters set out in order to get the most from the situation for both employer and employee. For the employee, it’s advisable to try to have a dedicated space for your home office; somewhere you can get peace and quiet and work without distractions. A separate space will also allow you to close the door as it were, on work when for example, it’s the weekend otherwise you might think about work issues every time you walk past your desk! In terms of the employer, they will want to be assured that you are fully contactable in your home office situation.

Tips For Having A Great Home Office

There are some key elements which will mean you get the most you possibly can from your work-from-home environment:

  • Find a reliable Internet service provider. This might sound obvious but truly your work-from-home situation will be all the more stressful should you not have WiFi/Broadband that is reliable mid conference call. Test different providers and ask local friends, family and neighbours for recommendations as quality of service depends on different areas. Furthermore, you’ll find that prices can regularly vary from supplier to supplier so it’s worth checking out for the best deals. However don’t prioritise price over quality of signal!
  • Treat your working-at-home day as you would a regular office day in terms of your hours; take tea breaks and step away from your desk, call to a friend for lunch and so on. In core hours, be at your desk at all times so that you are fully contactable.
  • If it’s possible, try to have some natural lighting coming into the room that you are working in; ideally have the natural light or window behind you because if you are seated at a window, it will prove distracting to watch what goes by all the time.

Styling Your Home Office

While this might not seem to be the biggest priority, having a nice space to work in and having comfortable furniture will create a positive environment and a better work space for you. This will only serve to make your work more fruitful. Creating a home office won’t cost a fortune and once you have the basics, you can add things like accessories as you go.

Brown Office Chair

Your office chair is likely to be the most important item for your home office. It’s nice when you don’t have to sacrifice comfort for style and the Carmon office chair certainly fits that bill. With a brown leather look, it is superbly sleek in its own right but the high back allows for fantastic support even for those long days in front of your laptop.

An office desk will also need to be comfortable; we can probably all remember uncomfortable school desks! This beautiful Calia desk is a contemporary piece of furniture which uniquely has a traditional design to it; the wonderful finish of the wild American oak speaks for itself and this desk will simply be a joy to sit at. This writing desk also includes ample storage with two drawers and a small press with useful shelving.

A bookshelf is a handy addition to your home office obviously because it can provide additional storage; they also can add a distinctive look to the space and the other fantastic thing is that they come in a variety of sizes so you are sure to find one to suit the dimensions you have. We love the Calia bookcase because it of course matches the Calia writing desk and so would complete the look. The great thing about this bookcase too is that it is minimalistic enough to blend in with an existing desk or existing office furniture that you have. If you only have a corner space to work with, the Kimberley bookcase is a great choice and looks amazing. Or this modern cube style storage is proving immensely popular and comes in a number of varying sizes.

Accessories

Accessories can liven up your space and add your own sense of style and taste to really make it your own. Art, plants and picture frames will finish off the whole look of the office and make you want to sit at your desk. Choose carefully and don’t let it get to cluttered; try to stick to a theme, for example, metallic accessories including a picture frame, a metallic buddha figure and a plant pot with a metallic finish. In terms of plants, you probably want something low maintenance such as succulents, cacti which also look great.

We wish you well in your stylish new home office!
